Rehabilitative Services

The Lighthouse offers rehabilitative services for East Texans who are blind or visually impaired. Whether a person has recently undergone the loss of sight or has dealt with it from birth, our programs are designed to build self-confidence for a more fulfilling lifestyle. These programs include learning to travel with confidence, living independently and preparing to return to employment. No matter what the goal of the blind or visually impaired individual, our highly capable instructors can assist through one on one instruction.

Programs & Services

Orientation & Mobility

Blind person with O&M SpecialistOrientation and Mobility (O&M) training provides people with the tools and skills needed for safe and independent travel. O&M specialists teach people how to move about their homes, schools, communities and work places with safety and confidence while answering key questions such as “Where am I?”, “Where do I want to go?”, and “How am I going to get there?” Individuals are trained to problem solve through the use of their remaining senses and to utilize devices such as handheld telescopes, white canes and GPS systems. Instruction may include familiarization to the environment, crossing busy streets, grocery shopping, using public transportation, navigating through an airport to catch a flight, and more. Safe and independent travel can be achieved with O&M training.
